Our Behavior Therapy program uses principles of Applied Behavior Analysis as well as traditional therapeutic techniques from the fields of speech and occupational therapy. We use reinforcement as well as preventative behavior management strategies to create changes in functioning.
What is ABA?
ABA, Applied Behavior Analysis, is a behavior intervention program developed by O. Ivar Lovaas at UCLA over 40 years ago which addresses core behavioral challenges resulting from impairments in social communication and emotional regulation. ABA uses reinforcement as well as preventative and proactive behavior management strategies to create change in small steps. These steps build over time toward significant changes in functioning. Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA), who have master’s degrees in behavior analysis or a closely related field, provide supervision of the behavior technicians who deliver the treatment protocol.
ABA is based on published, peer-reviewed, longitudinal group research studies, which support its efficacy in implementing behavior change.
Applied Behavior Analysis at CSLOT
CSLOT offers ABA and draws from other methodologies, such as Pivotal Response Therapy, the SCERTS Model, and DIR (Developmental Individual-difference Relationship-based model). Treatment occurs in individual in the clinic and at home.
All children receive individual treatment, the intensity and frequency of which is decided by the Board Certified Behavior Analyst, who performs an evaluation and sets recommended goals. While in group treatment, the child is supported by her individual behavior technician, who also administers individual treatment. Thus, children receive ABA in individual sessions and then practice their newly learned skills and behaviors in a group context as well as in their homes. Families learn the methods used in therapy, and receive the support they need to help their child achieve emotional regulation and communicate effectively.
Types of Services
Behavior therapy sessions at CSLOT are available as individual sessions and group sessions in our clinic as well as home-based sessions. Depending on the goals of the client, a specific combination of individual, group and home sessions are recommended.
Home-Based Individual Sessions
In home-based individual sessions, a behavior technician/early interventionist (BT/EI) works one-on-one with the client and the client’s family in the client’s home or other community-based location, such as a park or a restaurant. The BT/EI works under the direction of a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA). Goals are targeted to the specific needs of the client and all activities are shaped toward achieving them. Parents/caregivers are required to be present at home and encouraged to participate in sessions.
Clinic-Based Individual Sessions
Similar to home-based sessions, in individual clinic-based sessions, a BT/EI works one-on-one with the client and the client’s family under the direction of a board certified behavior analyst (BCBA). Goals are targeted to the specific needs of the client and all activities are shaped toward achieving them. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to participate in sessions.
Clinic-Based Group Sessions
In group sessions, a BT/EI works one-on-one with a client as the client participates in group therapy sessions. The BT/EI address specific goals targeted to the needs of the client while supporting the client to participate in group activities. Group sessions have the added benefit of being able to better address the generalization of goals as well as the opportunity for increased interaction with peers. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to participate in sessions.
A Team Approach
Our program’s strength comes from a team approach to evaluation and treatment, with speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists supporting the work of the behavior therapists. Parents, also regarded as agents of change, are included every step of the way, so that they have the skills to manage their child’s behavior at home and in the community.
